Children with autism and their families are now closer to having a treatment centre.

The province announced a $1.5 million grant towards the building of the Maier Centre for Autism Services in Edmonton.

And that donation has already been matched by private donators for a total of $3 million. The centre is slated to be built near 174th Street and 103 Avenue.

"Families can expect a facility that brings all the services together under one roof. And it gives them a place to go for support and treatment and services," said Terri Duncan with Children's Autism Services of Edmonton.

The centre has a price tag of $5.5 million, and Autism Services of Edmonton is still looking for additional funding.

Construction on the centre is set to begin later this year.
