In a 7-6 vote, Edmonton city council decided to shelve a proposal for the bus shuttle from the Century Park LRT station in south Edmonton to the international airport.

City councillors expressed numerous concerns with the plan. Two of the main reasons for voting down the service revolved around the anticipated cost and that many suburban Edmonton neighbourhoods are still waiting for bus service.

The plan was to have buses running every half hour, 20 hours a day, seven days a week. And the cost of a one-way ticket was slotted to be $5, which is nearly double the usual Edmonton Transit fare and it wouldn't be transferable.

Edmonton Airports was set to be a financial partner in the route, though it hadn't committed an exact dollar amount. A spokesperson calls council's decision unfortunate and hopes transit is an option in the future.

"We've certainly seen over the past few months more interest and more support for the bus service. Although today we couldn't find resolution, we continue to believe were moving forward," said Traci Bednard with Edmonton Airports.

And despite the proposed route getting the thumbs down, bus service will still be heading to the airport regardless.

In August, eight buses a day will head to Leduc -- stopping at the airport as well but only during peak hours. The new plan would increase airport service dramatically.

Administration expected the 18-month trial run to lose nearly $1 million.
