Former Olympic champion figure skaters David Pelletier and Jamie Sale have announced they are seeking a divorce.
The Canadian couple issued a statement Friday stating that they plan to end their four-year marriage. However, they will to continue skating together.
Pelletier and Sale were married on Dec. 30, 2005 and have a son together. They have been separated for a year-and-a-half.
"We've had an incredible partnership for the past 12 years and we look forward to that mutual respect and commitment continuing both on the ice and as we parent our son," Sale said in a statement.
"While this is always a difficult decision, we still share two of the most important parts of our lives in common, and for that reason we wanted it to be amicable and by mutual agreement."
The pair won Olympic gold at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City following a major judging scandal.
They began their on-ice partnership in 1998. Pelletier then moved to Montreal to train with Sale, and later separated from his wife.
The two figure skaters now live in Edmonton, and plan to remain there, sharing custody of their son.
"As a team, we have achieved many goals, but no medal or accomplishment can compare to our son," Pelletier said in a statement. "He will always be our priority."
