Edmonton police have now charged a 19-year-old male with the first-degree murder of a 23-year-old city woman.

Colton Barry Ferguson is also being charged with possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and breach of probation. The young man is also charged with assault with a weapon because police say the victim's brother was allegedly swung at with a weapon, but not struck.

The victim's family members gathered at the Stadium LRT station Monday afternoon, where a 23-year-old mother-of-two was shot dead Friday night.

Police say the medical examiner has determined that Heather Rae Thurier died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

The victim's brother, who says he was with her at the time of her death, tells CTV News she asked a young man for a cigarette before he pulled out a long-barreled weapon and shot her. The suspect fled on foot immediately after.

Police say the suspect allegedly pulled out a long-barreled weapon, possibly a sawed-off shotgun, and shot Thurier.

Investigators are now looking to locate Ferguson's backpack.

Police are asking for the public's help to find a red/white backpack that could have been dropped anywhere between Stadium LRT and a gas station near 97 Street and 118 Avenue Friday evening after 10:30 p.m.

Detectives are also asking residents in the area to check their yards for the backpack.
