A 50-year-old Edmonton man has been charged in connection with a 1981 homicide of a 33-year-old woman.

Robert James Fletcher has been charged with first-degree murder along with rape, robbery, kidnapping and possession of an offensive weapon.

Police say they arrested Fletcher at an Edmonton residence on on Thursday.

Investigator say forensic testing played a key role in officers being able to move this 29-year-old case forward.

On December 4th, 1981 Gerdina Kruidbos was found dead in her taxi cab in the area of 144 Avenue and 72 Street. Police say she had last picked up a male at the Continental Inn at 16625 Stony Plain Road the night before she was found dead.

Police were able to determine that Kruidbos had been sexually assaulted and died from multiple stab wounds.

Fletcher is scheduled to appear in court on May 25th.
