It's only been four years since Edmonton's Klondike Days was renamed Capital Ex. Now, a motion is expected to come down asking Northlands' board members to change the name one more time.
Next month at the Northlands' annual general meeting, a Northlands' shareholder will request the name change -- arguing that the branding of Capital Ex hasn't been effective.
"It might be a lively discussion, it might not be," said City Couns. Ed Gibbons who sits on the board. Gibbons is not for a name change and thinks Edmontonians need to give the current name a chance.
"I've gotten over it. I think it's move-on time. I think the reality is it's a different era than it was when you think about Klondike Days."
But some councillors disagree saying a name change shouldn't immediately be ruled out.
"Capital Ex it doesn't even say anything about Edmonton so if they are considering changing the name to reflect Edmonton and the nature of Edmonton -- I'll be looking forward to that," said Couns. Amarjeet Sohi.
Northlands management argues it has put a lot of work into the branding of Capital Ex and doesn't see a reason to change it now.
"Times have changed. The public was telling us they wanted something a little more vibrant, a little more exciting and so we did listen to the customer," said Northlands president Ken Knowles.
The discussion will require the support of three-quarters of the members present at the annual general meeting on April 19th.
