Two Edmonton police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the death of a man last spring. The incident was being investigated by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team. ASIRT has determined criminal charges against the officers involved are not warranted.

On May 10, 2009, two police officers attempted to take Shawn Michael Price, 36, into custody on a charge of an attempted personal robbery near 102nd Street and 107th Avenue. . As they tried to make the arrest, the suspect resisted and allegedly tried to take one of the officer's pistols from the holster.

The officer's partner, an officer with less than one year of experience on the force, hit Price with her baton several times but the struggle continued for approximately three minutes.

ASIRT confirms that officer then shot the suspect once in the hip. Despite being shot, Price continued to try to get the first officer's pistol. ASIRT confirms the second officer fired a second shot, which struck Price in the back, ending the struggle. Emergency crews worked on Price at the scene but he was pronounced dead in hospital.

The executive director of ASIRT has determined the officers' actions were justified under the circumstances.
