The Olympic torch made its way through Alberta Wednesday and by late afternoon, had arrived in the City of Champions.

On day 76 of the torch relay, the torch entered Lloyminster early Wednesday, made its way to Kitscoty, Vermilion, St. Paul and then onward to Vegreville.

The torch continues on its journey Wednesday afternoon when it hits Sherwood Park around 12:30 p.m. The next stop was Namao, followed by St. Albert 3:15 p.m.

"I think it's important to see it because it went throughout Canada," said Frank Chiasson in Namao.

The torch officially began its trek into Edmonton at Hawrelak Park around 5 p.m., and Edmontonians gathered to cheer on the torch carriers.

From the park, the torch was carried past the University of Alberta main campus, down Whyte Avenue, and at around 6 p.m moved along the Walterdale Bridge.

The flame then moved toward the Alberta Legislature, down Jasper Avenue, and came to a final stop at Churchill Square where local Olympian Doreen Ryan, who competed in speed skating in the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, lit the community cauldron around 7 p.m.

The torch's visit wrapped up with a celebration at Churchill Square where Edmontonians took in some local music.

After it leaves Edmonton, the torch will visit several smaller communities in the province before heading off to Red Deer.

At the end of its journey, the flame will arrive in Vancouver on February 12th for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
