Alberta MP James Rajotte is optimistic Canada will be able to meet its objectives on reducing greenhouse gas emissions as world leaders head home from the climate change summit in Copenhagen.

The Edmonton-Leduc MP is downplaying concerns Canada's commitment will amount to a significant economic hardship for the Alberta oil sands.

"You're only going to get there in part by regulating the industry so they have to meet certain targets," Rajotte said. He added that innovative new technologies when it comes to the energy and automotive sectors will also help Canada meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.

Rajotte also questions Canada's designation as the "colossal fossil"...a dubious honour give to Canada by environmental groups which rank our greenhouse gas target as being amongst the worst in the world.

"In fact these awards are unfair in a sense because they're targeting Canada," Rajotte said. "We do need an agreement that's comprehensive and includes all countries and we need one that is realistic and we hope we have one here today with this recent agreement."
