A 12-hour power outage kept close to 360 households in Mill Woods in the dark and struggling to stay warm overnight.

Power was finally restored around 7 a.m. Monday to area residents after a malfunction in an underground cable was fixed by Epcor.

"From time to time, we see with underground or aerial lines there will  a mechanical malfunction and that happens in due course of wear and tear," said Mike Gibbs, Epcor spokesperson.

The outage couldn't have come at a worse time for homeowners as the city is currently suffering through a deep freeze, complete with windchill warnings and brutally cold temperatures.

"It was brutal. It was a challenge all night just to stay warm," said Rob Schweiger.

The Schweiger family said they kept warm throughout the night by curling up around a wood burning fireplace.

"At midnight last night I ran to Costco and grabbed a few boxes of firelogs," said Schweiger.

The city's management office said the blackout should serve as a reminder for homeowners to be prepared to deal with emergencies. The city suggests to always have extra blankets, food, water, and candles on hand in case of a power outage.

Over the weekend, Edmonton recorded the lowest temperatures in Canada bottoming out at around minus 46 degrees at the International Airport.

CTV meteorologist Josh Classen says temperatures will start to warm up by Wednesday with daytime highs hovering around minus 10.
