Two men were arrested after they allegedly stole a taxi and smashed through trees and medians while they led police on a chase through downtown Edmonton early Saturday morning.

Police began pursuing the stolen vehicle near 124th Street and 118th Avenue and followed it through downtown Edmonton.

Officers say the suspects plowed through trees and drove over top of curbs during the pursuit.

"As we were following it the front wheel began to disintegrate from starting and stopping and striking a few curbs," said Acting Sgt. Serge Soucy.

The vehicle finally came to a stop near 101st Street just north of 110th Avenue at around 2 a.m.

The two suspects tried to flee on foot, but were apprehended a short distance away with the help of the canine unit.

Police have not yet released details on charges.

The front of the taxi cab was damaged during the incident.
