RCMP have charged one man in connection to the death of a Grade 11 student from Rocky Mountain House. The teen was killed after being shot with a device used to scare off bears.

James Alexander Rose ,41, of Rocky Mountain House is now being charged with criminal negligence causing death. The man is also being charged with the careless use of a prohibited device, and manufacturing a prohibited device.

On Sept. 7th, RCMP said the teen was shot by a bear banger inside a vehicle.

Classmates identified the teen as 16-year-old Tanner Mayer, a student at West Central High School.

Police said two teens were outside a home, when one of them picked up what appeared to be an ordinary pen but it was capable of firing various forms of projectiles. Police said the object was a bear banger, which is used to scare bears away.

Rose is set to appear in court on Dec. 2nd.
