CTV News has learned that the H1N1 virus moved through a herd of pigs at the University of Alberta's experimental farm.

The situation happened three months ago and officials decided not to announce it to the public.

Thirty-eight pigs at the facility were tested for the virus back in June after some of the animals began displaying flu-like symptoms. Thirty-five pigs tested positive for influenza, but it's not known how many were infected with the virus.

CTV News was told two employees tested positive for the virus and have since recovered.

The herd of 2,000 pigs have also now been declared virus-free.

The provost of the University of Alberta told CTV News the risk to other students was minimal and it followed all protocols.

The Edmonton Research Station Experimental Farms is part of the south campus and is used mainly for in-depth agriculture and forestry research.
