A 45-year-old Edmonton-area man, who was charged with possessing child pornography earlier this week, was found dead by RCMP early Saturday morning.

Officers found the body of Kerry Glen Avey lying near a vehicle parked in the visitors area of the St. Albert RCMP detachment at 2:35 a.m Saturday.

"Two of our officers were returning from being out in the city on patrol...and saw what they thought was a person lying down in the parking lot area near a vehicle," said Cst. Laurel Kading. "They went to examine the person and find out why they were there and discovered the person was in fact deceased."

Police say Avey died from a self-inflicted gun shot to the head.  A shotgun was found near the body.  His death has been concluded a suicide and will not be investigated any further.

On Wednesday Avey was charged with possessing child pornography after officials with the Canada Border Services Agency found 50 CDs containing pornographic images of children, following a search of his suitcase at the Edmonton International Airport.

The St. Albert resident had just returned from a trip to Thailand via San Francisco.

CTV News learned that Avey was on medical leave from a teaching job at a school in Wabasca in northern Alberta, but was expected to return to the classroom later this year.

Police say an extra victim services unit has been brought in to help Avey's family.
