Edmonton police are investigating the death of man who was reported injured in front of a residence at 109 Avenue and 84 Street early Friday morning by an anonymous 911 caller.

Just after 4:30 a.m., police said a 911 call was made from a payphone on Jasper Avenue and 94 Street alerting EMS about an injured male. Paramedics rushed the man to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.  At that point, police were called.

Homicide detective Frank Metselaar said they are hoping to get in contact with the individual who made the 911 call.

"This person may have information that will help us understand exactly what happened this morning," he said.

Homicide detectives, traffic and forensic teams are all now on the scene to help with the investigation.

"We don't know what happened," said Insp. Terry Rocchio with the Edmonton Police Service. "Hopefully with everybody involved we can piece it together and find out what happened."

Officers have gone done door-to-door in the area looking for people who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area.

Police believe the man may have died as a result of a hit-and-run collision.

CTV News has learned that the man has been identified and police have now notified his next-of-kin.

Investigators are hoping to speak with anyone who may have witnessed anything in the area of 109 Avenue and 84 Street between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
