RCMP have confirmed that human remains discovered in the backyard of a High Prairie residence appear to be the remains of an infant.

Around 7:30 Thursday night, RCMP were called to the home on 59 Avenue after the homeowner noticed the remains in his yard.

The remains have been transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Edmonton where an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday. It is not known at this time how long the remains have been buried or the age or gender of the infant.

"That's the job for the medical examiner. They'll determine age, gender and possible cause and manner of death and possibly may be able to tell us how long the body may have been in that location," said Cpl. Darren Anderson with the Strathcona RCMP.

High Prairie RCMP are encouraging anyone who may have any information about this incident to contact them directly at 780-523-3370 or to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
