A 25-year-old man who was arrested Saturday night for his alleged involvement in the abduction of a 16-year-old girl, which prompted a province-wide amber alert, already had 15 outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Police found the suspect, 25-year-old Kyle Bowler, at his home near 34th Avenue and 58th Street just after 11 p.m. Saturday. Tactical and patrol officers surrounded the home and the suspect quickly surrendered.

A police inspector on scene said witnesses who were with the 16-year-old girl moments before her alleged abduction helped lead investigators to the suspect's home.

"With their assistance they informed us that the likelihood of the suspect being here was very high," said Insp. Joel Whittaker. "Through our investigations and further interviews we were able to confirm he was in the residence and with the assistance of tactical and negotiators we were able to end this without anyone getting hurt."

The suspect was living in a home just a short distance from where the missing 16-year-old girl was found earlier in the day.

A woman, who asked not to be identified, says Bowler had been living with her family for the past year, while in a relationship with her daughter.

"He was a very good person," said the woman. "He was polite, seemed honest. It was scary because it was out of character for him."

Bowler was wanted on 15 outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest for a number of offences, including possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.

"[I] hope the law changes, that these people that have multiple charges and multiple warrants out for their arrest eventually get behind bars," said Tom Exelby, who lives in the area where the suspect was arrested.

The mother of the 16-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted by Bowler tell CTV News her daughter is mentally shaken up, but is doing well physically.  She went on to say her daughter was unconscious for a period of time, but that she remembers fighting off her attacker.

The teen suffered some cuts in the alleged attack, but her family fears the emotional wounds will take far longer to heal.

Province-wide Amber Alert Issued Saturday

Police issued a province-wide amber alert Saturday afternoon, but canceled it about an hour later when the girl went to a home near 59th Street and 38th Avenue distraught and looking for help.

The resident immediately called police and officers were able to confirm shortly after that the teen was in fact the subject of the alert.

The victim was taken to hospital immediately for evaluation.

Police believe the 16-year-old was taken by Bowler from the area of 28th Avenue and 48th Street at about 7:15 a.m. in a 1995 Grey Ford Windstar van. That same vehicle was found parked a short distance from where the girl was found.

The teen hadn't been seen or heard from since 7 a.m. after she attended a party to celebrate her 16th birthday with friends near 55th Street and 38B Avenue on Friday night and stayed there until early Saturday morning.

Police say the girl was walking to Weinlos Park near 28th Avenue and 49th Street with her friends at about 7 a.m. when the group was approached by a lone male in a grey minivan.

The man offered them a ride and the group accepting and got into the vehicle.

Police say when they got to the park the man began making sexual advances towards the girl. The group asked the man to stop before they all got out of the vehicle.

The driver then allegedly pointed a rifle at one of the male teens in the group and threatened him. The teens fled on foot, staying together for the first few blocks, and then splitting to make their way home.

Police say the incident went unreported and then at about 7:15 a.m. witnesses saw a man carrying a rifle near 27A Street and 49th Avenue. The man was later seen getting into a grey minivan with a young woman matching the girl's description.

The Edmonton Police Service Child Protection Section is leading the investigation; charges against Bowler are expected to be laid in the next couple days.

Five other people who were in the suspect's home at the time of his arrest were interviewed by investigators and then released shortly after.
