The Mayor and city councillors have voted to move ahead with some cuts to city spending. The City is struggling to make up a $35 million shortfall in lost revenue.

On Wednesday night, council debated a number of changes including, increases to park and ride fees, taking trolley buses off track before originally scheduled and cutting leisure centre hours and closing Scona pool.

Mayor Stephen Mandel says that council will look at how these programs will be implemented and whether or not the City can find other sources of revenue to offset some of the costs.

"The municipal government mandates we have a balanced budget, we can't spend money without having some come in, so that's what we had to do this year," he said.

A transit official says it's still not clear exactly what the park and ride fees will be, but it's expected that the increase fee could bring in about $400,000 a year. City Councillor Kim Krushell tells CTV it's not worth it.

"In Edmonton, we're still working on improving our transit system. We're still not staged in my opinion, where we're trying to get people to take it and so any area where we discourage that, in my opinion, isn't a great idea," she said.

Krushell hopes to make a motion at the next council meeting to take back the fee.
