A young man who is known to police is dead after what Mounties are calling a suspicious death at the Samson Cree Nation.

RCMP responded to reports of gunshots around 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning and found an injured man.

The victim was found on the ground outside a townhouse complex, backing onto a school, and less than a kilometre from the new RCMP detachment.

Another townhouse, about a block away, was also surrounded by police tape, but Mounties aren't saying how the two scenes are related.

Neighbours tell CTV the violence in the area is overwhelming.

"I'm very concerned because of the violence around here, I wish it would just stop, I wish parents would be more responsible, it's just so sad," said Joyce Tootoosis.

The major crimes unit from Calgary is investigating and police aren't saying whether the shooting death is gang related. No suspects have been arrested.
