Tuesday's daytime high in Edmonton was around minus 20, a new record set almost half a century ago.

The late winter blast is leaving many of the city's most popular pedestrian routes almost bare.

And at the Edmonton International Aiport, the cold situation was even worse, with temperatures recorded at minus 42 Tuesday morning.

"We do have a lot of folks that are working outside and in this kind of severe temperature it's challenging for them as well," said Traci Bednard with Edmonton Airports.

And according to one psychiatrist, the challenge isn't just physical for many people.

"There's confusion, there's disappointment, there's annoyance, anger frustration," said Leslie Block.

Block said with the frigid winter still around so late in the year, it can take a toll on the human psyche.

The cold weather can also be tough on people who suffer from depression, and the best thing for them over the next few days is sun and warmer weather.
