The city decided Wednesday to back away from a controversial anti-idling bylaw for the time being, in favor of a multi-year education program.

The program will focus on the negative effects of idling vehicles.

The debate lasted much of Wednesday and has been up in the air for weeks, igniting some heated debate amongst Edmontonians.

Council will look at how effective the education campaign has been after one year and then consider whether a bylaw is needed.

In the meantime, the city will ask Edmontonians to avoid idling excessively, and motorists will not have to worry about getting a ticket.

Originally the administration had recommended a $250 fine for idling more than three minutes when the temperature is above -10 C, with exceptions for emergency, commercial and passenger vehicles.

Last year the city already had an education campaign in place but Mayor Stephen Mandel said it didn't work and he's pushing for a longer program, that lasts at least a year.
