Police have charged an Edmonton man with murder after they discovered the body of 20-year-old Chantel Robertson buried in the backyard of the home where she was last seen alive.

Matthew Todd Barrett, 24, has been charged with first degree murder and indignity to a body.

Investigators discovered the body around 6 p.m. Monday in the backyard of a home on 98 St. and 80 Ave.

Later in the evening officers identified the body as Robertson.

The blonde-haired, blue-eyed Robertson, who was working as an escort at the time, was last seen Saturday around 2:30 a.m. when she was dropped off at the home where her body was found.

Neighbours tell CTV News screaming and fighting were some of the last sounds heard from the house when Robertson was believed to be there.

One neighbour, who asked not to be identified out of fear of the attackers, said two young men were living at the home at the time.

On Sunday, the two men were seen moving some belongings away in the back of a truck.

"It's rather a little bit frightening to know that it's so close to such a quiet neighbourhood," she said. "Even though we're just off Whyte Avenue, it's a quiet neighbourhood."

Investigators have since turned their investigation on the house where Robertson was dropped off at, as well as a second home ten blocks away.

"The following morning she was supposed to be going to work about 10 a.m. and she didn't turn up to work," police spokeswoman Karen Carlson said. "Another concerning thing is that she has her cellphone turned off and according to family and friends that is very unusual."

Neighbours said they thought the two men were in the process of moving to a house on 93 Street and 72 Avenue.

Investigators said many people have been interviewed in connection to the case.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled. The cause of death is still unknown.
